The Outsiders-Backstory

     I am reading The Outsiders by S. E. Hinton. In the first chapter, the narrator thinks about the time his friend, Johnny, was attacked by the Socs on page 8. This is a backstory because it is going back in time and telling the reader about the fight and the fact that Johnny was help at knife point by a gang of Socs.  This backstory or flashback is important because the main character Ponyboy is about to be attacked by Socs too and we know how badly his friend was impacted by being beaten up.  It makes him scared and us scared for him.
